When Spier brought the Winelands to a fabulous private residence in Joburg a while ago, it was the absolute perfect Joburg winter setting. And it made me realise you only require a few key elements to create a hospitable & memorable evening.

Going out to a restaurant or venue is always fun, but it can also get noisy & pricey. So, in winter I prefer to have a cosy get-together at home.

I always make sure that I have these five essentials in place for a perfect evening in:

1) The Right Company. Good company & stimulating conversations are food for the soul. I reckon if you’re in the right company you can have Marmite toast & it will still be memorable, right?

2) Your favourite drinks. In my case, it is bubbly, wine & G&T’s. I’m having more of a white wine phase at the moment, so I’m a bit obsessed with Spier’s Creative Block 2 (a dry white blend of Sauvignon Blanc & Semillon). Also remember to have water & good coffee around.

3) Food. Nothing gets a conversation going like plates & platters of delicious South African eats. You can never go wrong with cheeses, fruit, meat platters, bread & spreads.

4) Cosiness. I’m talking about make your guests feel snug with blankets, roaring fires inside & outside. Even gas heaters & warm water bottles. And don’t forget the candles & dimmed lighting.

5) Music. Essential to a really laid-back evening are the tunes. Live music is amazing, but if you’re not keen to pic up the mic or guitar, then stream your favourite tunes or have a YouTube playlist in the background.

  20. I love the idea of pop up venues across the country. I would be happy to host Spier in Knysna 😉 It’s a great farm and we enjoy visiting them when in Stellenbosch. Liked both pages.
