My latest fun ‘project’ is a really awesome one that I’ve been wanting to do for some time now. It is called… [drum roll] ….

SIX HAIR STYLES IN SIX MONTHS

This sounds a bit crazy at first, but fear not. I’m not talking extreme changes like hair chameleon Rihanna. This is more like an experiment to show & prove how you can gradually really change your hairstyle from month to month.

For the past couple of years I’ve been blonde & my hair was mostly a lob (long bob), but I felt like a change. So naturally I spoke to master stylist at Carlton Hair, David Gillson, about this idea. He was just as excited as I was. Fast forward a bit & here it is:

What I love about this style

  • My hair is shoulder length, so it can still be tied up (very convenient for exercise, cooking & for playing with my little guy)
  • The darker colour is spot on for colder months
  • It can be styled in a variety of ways
  • The colour & style became more beautiful over time (in my opinion)

The downside of this style

  • With the darker shade, my grey hair started to show at around day 20 already (eek!)
  • My hair is really straight & rather fine, & it is super tough to maintain a bit of volume – even when I’ve done a good blow out

TIPS, TRICKS & NOTES

  • It is very important to talk to an experienced hair stylist before attempting a drastic colour or style change.
  • The colour used on my hair is A NEW COLOUR by DAVINES (available at Carlton Hair & selected other salons countrywide). They are paraben & sulphate free & really ‘hair friendly’.Davines Colour
  • The Alexa Chung style is called the swag (OR Swingy Shag). It is explained really well over here.
  • Key to getting the Alexa Chung look is a curtain bang and effortless moving texture. Just like curtains frame a window, so does a curtain bang frame your face. This will accentuates your eyes and your cheekbones.
  • Less is more with this look. Style your bang by using a windshield wiper kind of movement. The messier the better.
  • Products that you need to achieve this style: A weightless volumiser; a heat protector & a comb to ‘tease’ in a bit more volume & occassionaly I use a straigtening iron for a more sleek look.
  • Tip: Before attempting any crazy styles & colour changes, ensure that your hair is in great condition. When I pop into Carlton, I always have a Micro Mist Treatment for the healthiest possible hair. Micro Mist Hair & Scalp Treatment makes you look slightly like an alien, but it is awesome. Don’t stress if you see steam (which is actually mist) coming out of the head piece. This treatment repairs & rejuvenates your hair, giving strength, suppleness & a longer lasting shine. Mist (not steam) isgenerated by ultrasound to process the treatment. This works in two ways: firstly, the particles of mist are much smaller and lighter than those of steam and therefore they can penetrate the cuticle of the hair to a greater depth. The hair shaft is activated & opened, whilst the treatment is locked deep within. The Replumping Moisturising Treatment with Micro Mist is priced at R350 & the Nourishing Reconstruction Treatment with Micro Mist costs R500 at Carlton Hair.Micro Mist Treatment

Tell me: are you keen to try out a new style soon? Or maybe even a style a month? Leave a comment & let me know.

Hope you’re having a happy, healthy hair day.
