When I attended the Dermalogica UltraCalming™ launch a while ago, I wasn’t actually surprised to learn that eight out of 10 people will suffer from sensitive skin at some point or another in their lives. What did come as a shock though is the realisation that my skin is also sensitive. (Denial?)
Then I realised that it happens to me more and more: I look in the mirror & notice that my skin is taking strain. On the day of the event I actually had rather red flared-up skin. Let’s call it ‘over-processed’ skin which is a result of a potent combination of stress, bad diet, lifestyle choices, genetics, pollution & hormonal issues.
Sensitive Skin can happen to anyone with any skin type & it means something different to each person. You might have redness & discomfort whenever you are out in the wind or sun or occasional flare-ups.
If you are sitting there wondering if your skin is also sensitive, look out for the following three signs (which should never be ignored):
- Redness
- Compromised barrier
- Dehydration
Thankfully Dermalogica’s powerfully soothing UltraCalming™ Duo comes to the rescue. It is the ultimate sensitive skin combo as it treats the irritation & dehydration caused by sensitive skin.
The UltraCalming™ duo contains Aloe & Oatmeal – two super soothing ingredients. Aloe which moisturises, nourishes & also contains anti-oxidants (like Vitamin E) to keep your skin healthy. Oatmeal which binds to skin to create a protective barrier against irritants & contains protein which improves the skin barrier function.
For the last two months, I have been using the UltraCalming™ Cool Water Gel & my skin felt as fantastic as ever. Hooray for a product that actually delivers what it promises.
I’ve always been a semi-Dermalogica fan, especially after listening to this awesome podcast called “How I built This” about the founder of Dermalogica, Jane Wurwand, but have never had an obsession with any of their products. Until now. I love the Cool Water Gel so much that I even cut the tube open to use every last single drop.
Calm Water Gel is basically a moisturizer for Sensitive Skin which has been reported to leave your skin way more hydrated (94% of those who tested it felt hydrated for eight hours after & 109,4% felt more hydrated immediately). Essentially it is a weightless water gel that decreases water loss in the skin. Dual Hyaluronic Acid works in different layers of the skin to lock in the moisture.
The UltraCalming Calm Water Gel retails at R890 (for 50ml) which makes it slightly steep, but I am honestly so impressed with this product. I used it morning & night for about two months, so you get quite far with it.
The second product (which is my least favourite of the two) is the UltraCalming Barrier Defense Booster (R1220, 30ml for about 90+ uses). It is classed by the FDA (Food & Drug Administration, which ensures the safety of America’s food, cosmetics, drugs & medical devices) as a skin protectant drug. Expect a concentrated oil booster that soothes, nourishes & moisturizes to restore balance to sensitive skin. Apply before or mix it in with your moisturiser.
If you are experiencing sensitive skin, then I’d like to encourage you to make an appointment at Dermalogica for a free skin-mapping & make sure you don’t leave without your UltraCalming Calm Water Gel.
