Whenever we have a really special occasion, I like to pull out the stops with snacks starters. I have a few of these snacks dishes up my sleeve – one being my Smoked Salmon Starter. And now (*drum roll*) I’m going to share with you a really great, crowd pleasing snack or starter. The recipe was sent to me by Nederburg Wines & it is a real winner! They had me at Baked Camembert. It doesn’t get much better than this.

Note: I received this PR drop before the alcohol ban was reinstated, but please note that you can still support the local wine industry by placing your online order. Once the ban is lifted, you will receive your order. Your heart & palette will thank you!

BAKED CAMEMBERT WRAPPED IN VINE LEAF, Serves about 4

Ingredients:

250g Quality Camembert Cheese

1-3 Pickled Vine Leaves (available from Woolies or other speciality stores)

250ml Sugar

100ml Balsamic Vinegar

2 Onions, sliced

20ml Butter

10ml Salt

Method:

Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Prepare caramelised onions by frying the sliced onion on medium heat in a pan on the stove. Once golden brown & translucent, add the sugar & caramelise until the sugar has dissolved. Add the balsamic vinegar & simmer for 10 – 15 minutes.

Wrap the Camembert cheese in pickled vine leaves & bake in the oven, with the butter on top, for 5 minutes.

Remove from the oven. Top with the caramelised onions & serve with crackers or freshly baked bread.

This baked Camembert pairs beautifully with Nederburg Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 or Nederburg Baronne 2019.

Have I mentioned how good this wine is?

Let me know if you try this great recipe. Thanx for visiting.
