Today is Afrikaanse Taaldag, so I’m taking a break from chatting about beauty, reviews & food for a moment. Instead, I am going to share some of my favourite words from our epic language, Afrikaans, with you. Enjoy!

Tameletjie – sticking point

Giggel – giggles

Padkos – food that you eat on the road or road trip snacks

Knormoer – a starter in a vehicle

Kermderm – somebody who complains a lot

Negosiewinkel – general store

Ystervark – porcupine

Katelkletsies – pillow talk

Mooiplooi – cleavage

Fnuik – prevent

Defnislis – to combine definitief & beslis in one word; used to indicate that you are really certain

I’m curious to hear: what is your favourite Afrikaans word(s)? And maybe some other fun / awesome words from weird & wonderful languages around SA & around the world?

  1. Deurmekaar! I think I like it because it’s one of those words that doesn’t have a direct English translation… and also because it is such an accurate description of my home / brain / life…

    • Hey El. You make me laugh. I can imagine that your life / home / brain feels deurmekaar with three tiny tots, but you are doing an awesome job. xxx

  2. My absolutely favourite Afrikaans word is Pantoffels! I love the way it rolls off my very English sounding tongue 🙂
