Five Last-Minute Father’s Day Gift Ideas with Consol

Do you always imagine how you are going to treat your dad on Father’s Day & before you know if, it is right around the corner & you’re out of ideas or budget?

Relax. I have teamed up with Consol Glass to bring you some easy DIY gift ideas for this Father’s Day – coming up on Sunday 18 June 2017 in case you didn’t know.

I love love love Consol & whenever I find a moment, I simply pop in at their store in Woodmead & I can never leave empty handed. Eek. The amazing thing with glass (& Consol) is that the items are multi-functional, they’re environmentally friendly & they look neat. If you’ve been to our house, then you’ll know that loads of our kitchen goodies are stored in Consol containers.

Here are five ideas that you can complete in your own time & personalise it to your heart’s desire. All of the gifts below can be inexpensive or you can splurge. Plus, you can even choose to make one each or to give the same one to all of the dads in your life. I thought of all the dads in our family & I think I pretty much covered all the types.

The idea is basically to (1) combine a thoughtful gift – whether shop bought or hand made, & then (2) package it in something that is not harmful to the environment & is reusable (dad will certainly have use for the glass container afterwards too – whether it is for his nails, to refill his biltong or biscuit stash…).

First up, something for The Golfing Dad

I’ve been told that golfers can never have enough tees. So, in this jar could be tees, a new golf towel, golf shirt or glove & some golf balls. You can even pop a voucher to the golf shop inside. Tip: find out which golf ball brand & type dad loves the most.

Or you can make dad a mini-golf in a jar if you are feeling creative.

Naturally, you can make a jar for any type of sport that your dad loves. Just make sure you know which goodies (& brands) he loves…

Next up: The Banting Dad’s Jar

Grab a Consol jar & fill it with biltong, dry wors, banting crackers, dark chocolate, low carb rusks, a seed mix & almonds. Or if dad is not a banter, add lots of yummy treats like nougat, biscuits, crisps & chocolates.

And, something for The Handy Dad

A Builder’s Warehouse voucher is always welcome, so why not package it together with some rope, glue, double sided tape & other bits. And don’t forget the band aid just for fun! This is a great one for dad’s who are handy or for those who need a nudge in the DIY direction. I found these printables for DIY dads. So cleverly designed.

Then: something for The Hip Dad

Socks might sound silly to you, but high quality printed socks are very trendy at the moment. And they’re fun! Ernie loves his colourful socks, so we love giving them. They tend to be on the pricier side, but in my opinion they’re worth it. We love the Nic Harry socks which you can even match with boxer shorts, Sexy Socks or Feat Sock Co. You can also keep an eye out for more affordable options at H&M or Woolies.

Then last, but by no means least, Biscuits In A Jar! Perfect for Grandfathers or Dads.

I love to give edible gifts to grandfathers. They probably don’t need a gazillion little things to add to their 70-year-old collections. Oupas usually love eating & sharing delicious treats. If you are really handy, then make your own jam or braai marinade. Or give your own homemade biscuits.

Here is the recipe that I used. It is my go-to recipe for biscuits & works like a dream!

The Most Delicious Lemony Butter Cookies

175g / ¾ cup of unsalted butter

285g / 1½ cup caster sugar

1 egg

1 egg yolk

5ml / 1 teaspoon vanilla essence

Grated rind of 1 lemon

1.5ml / ¼ teaspoon of salt

2 ½ cups of cake flour

(optional, for decorating: coloured icing & small decorations)

Preheat the oven to 180°C. With an electric mixer (or lots of elbow grease), cream the butter until soft.  Gradually add the sugar & continue beating until light & fluffy. Using a wooden spoon, slowly mix in the whole egg & the egg yolk. Add the vanilla essence, lemon rind & salt. Stir to mix well. Add the flour & stir until blended. Gather the mixture into a ball, wrap in greaseproof paper & chill for 30 minutes.

[At this stage you can also pop the dough in the freezer & remove it 12 hours before you want to use it. Dough freezes very well for up to three months.]

Choose your favourite cookie cutters – we used the moustache, little man cutter & stars. On a floured surface, roll out the mixture about 3mm thick. Stamp out shapes & rounds with cookie cutters. Bake until lightly coloured – about 8 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack & leave to cool completely before icing & decorating, if wished. Try your best not to eat half the biscuits while packing them in the jar. It’s hard, I know.

Finally, make or print a Father’s Day card & you’re done. I love these printables for generic Father’s Day cards.
