I often find myself staring at the girly toys or clothes in stores & wondering who I can buy the glittery pink things for. What can I say? I am a girl-girl. I like girly things & pink & glitter. And I wouldn’t mind having a girl of my own either.

But in reality, I’m a boy mom & I live with guys which means I speak (almost) fluent ‘boy’ these days! Yup, my regular vocabulary includes terms like expedition, ‘Nerf’, Autobot, rescue, construction & ‘instruction’ (terms that can apparently be used interchangeably), Transformers, space rangers, Ninjago, epic, ninjas, Lego, Decepticon & battle. To name only a few. A couple of years ago I didn’t even know many of these words existed.

I now also have a good grip on what little boys like. Maybe it is because we talk about these topics all day. Everyday. And then some more. We have also written & posted a detailed list to Father Christmas. Then we had to email him with an ammended list. And just today the list changed again…

So, if you struggle to find gifts for boys aged 5 to around 11, look no further. I have just made your life a million times easier because this little gift list is boy & mom approved:

Fun T-Shirts

A t-shirt with the logo of the boy’s favourite sports team will instantly give you hero status! Personally, I prefer some quirky t-shirts like the ones made by Mevrou &  Co or MayBru.

Nerf MicroShots

Nerf guns & all other Nerf things are big around here. We’ve been to NERF parties, Oliver wears his Nerf buffs for days on end & he literally begs for NERF guns all the time.

Oliver recently got to test out the Nerf Fortnite Microshot & it was a total blast (quite literally)! There are so many Nerf guns to choose from, but we love the new Nerf MicroShots. It is a series of collectible, affordable mini-sized Nerf toy blasters that are the absolute perfect size for a six year old! A fun little carry around Nerf gun.

The MicroShots series includes replicas of the FORTNITE TS blaster, FORTNITE RL blaster,  FORTNITE Llama blaster, iFORTNITE HC-R, FORTNITE AR-L & Micro Battle Bus blaster.

Books

Books are always high on my list of gifts for kids. The great thing is that you can find awesome kids books from second-hand stores too. There are so many awesome books out there, but if you’re stuck then go for the Julia Donaldson (illustrated by Axel Scheffler) books. Some of her iconic titles have also been translated into Afrikaans by Philip de Vos.

Lego

This list will not be complete without Lego, right? More specifically, Ninjago Lego. The obsession with Ninjago drives me a bit bonkers some days! The 3-in-one Lego sets are also great value for money.

Santa is still thinking about how much his budget is for Lego this year! Haha.

Pool Toys

Swimming & playing in the water is the thing to do during the summer holidays, so I reckon you can’t go wrong with pool toys or inflatables.

The Crazy Store offers a wide variety of pool toys at affordable prices. Fun swimwear also gets a thumbs up! Pick n Pay & Cotton On Kids always have some great options.

Board Games

What would a summer holiday be without some board games, puzzles & card games? Real good, old-fashioned family fun without screens insight. We love UNO cards around here, but our latest obsession is Monopoly Junior. It is suitable for kiddos from five years up. Oliver is loving it so much that he wants to play it five times a day.  The little figurines – T-Rex, ducky, Scottie or penguin – are my best.

Transformers

Once again with Transformers (like with Lego), I was totally unaware of how iconic these toys are. And the Transformers War for Cybertron is no exception. When Oli received his Siege toy figure he was ecstatic.

It is technically for boys aged 8 years & older, but at 6 Oliver managed to figure it out quite easily too. He loves that it can transform into various customizable weapon configurations.
