Lately, Oliver, who is now six, loves to play little games like ‘what is your favourite’ & ‘what if’ or he cracks silly jokes that make absolutely no sense or have no punch line at all. His jokes all end with ‘Wakka Wakka’ followed by giggles. Don’t ask me. I also don’t know. Haha.

At least I get the ‘what is your favourite’ game. And so, last weekend, we played it with our niece. I can’t actually remember what their answers were because I immediately started daydreaming about steak. A perfectly prepared steak. With smoked salmon in second place.

Which brings me to today’s post. And why you should head on over to The Hussar Grill in Morningside where my friend Christa & I recently had a delightful mid-week girls night. Firstly the Morningside Shopping centre is beautiful & the parking is easy. And the service at The Hussar grill is fast & friendly.

The meal started with some delicious garlicky, herbed olives & sweet potato crisps.
It is not surprising that their wine list received the Diners Club 2018 Platinum Wine List Award as it offers all the reasonably priced local favourites mixed up with some more unique, pricier wines. They are serious about meat & about celebrating the good things in life, which is why they have a “No Corkage Ever”. Cool, right?
Although we arrived with the idea of not having salad, we couldn’t resist the Caramelised Pear, Blue Cheese & Walnut salad. We also tried the Hollandse Bitterballen but were slightly underwhelmed. Next time I will definitely try the Fried Crumbed Camembert as a starter instead.
Next up, the steak. Aka the real reason that you should visit The Hussar Grill. I was tempted to try out the Picanha – one of The Hussar Grill favourites – but I doubt that I would have made it half way through this 600g rich flavourful Brazilian steak.
Christa chose the Hollandse Biefstuk– studded with coarse pepper & then flambeed with butter & brandy – with green beans. It received a definite double thumbs up. My own Fillet Bearnaise was perfectly prepared & served with butternut & spinach. Both of these were great choices. Our wine choice of the Rupert & Rothchild 2016 Classique was spot on & paired really well with our steaks.
The Hussar Grill in Morningside is a great go-to lunch spot for business peeps who enjoy meat or for a steak dinner with friends or family. My advice is to get there really hungry. Skip the starter, then don’t hold back when ordering your steak & have a really good bottle of wine. End your meal with some delicious Don Pedro’s (if you have any space left).
Mmm.

Ps. We were hosted by The Hussar Grill, however my review is honest & my own opinion.
