Today I’m over-the-moon to share Oliver’s big boy Lego room reveal. Hooray. You might know that I’ve been planning & dreaming about his room for a long long time now. But then life happens & things take longer than anticipated.

Planning a room make-over for a six-year old is also not so super easy mostly because a six-year-old has his (or her) very own specific ideas about colours, the position of furniture & the items that are allowed into the room. Haha. It’s very sweet though.

My main inspiration for this room came from the lovely ladies at Classy Clutter (see my inspiration post over here). This room is quite small & as tenants we can’t do too much to change it, so considering all the factors, I am quite impressed with the end result.

As for keeping the room neat & decluttered, I try to keep most of his Lego & other toys downstairs in the lounge area where he spends a lot of time playing. But the reality is that he loves to keep a mountain of soft toys on his bed & carries around his Lego & other less-than Instagrammable items up & scatters them around. I’m sure all mothers out there can relate. Keeping a room of a six-year-old neat & styled is (mostly) not possible.

My idea was to make the entire room white. It was a really creamy yellowy colour before, so all four walls got a coat of Dulux Brilliant White. At this point, Oli requested that we rather make his entire room blue. We then sort-of settled on one two-tone blue / white wall with a charcoal stripe in the middle.

The brown carpet is really ugly, so I found this black & white Jute Rug from Superbalist on sale. I’m so pleased that it covers most of the ugly brown carpet.

I used the little Dulux Rollertester (in Night Jewels 2) to create the line in the middle of the wall. It is such a handy little tool that is actually designed for testing colours, but I found it to be really useful in creating my striped two-tone wall. This little tester contained enough paint for about three layers on my stripe. Nifty, right?

The bedding that you see here is from Cotton On Kids. I also gave his existing white house shelves (from Mr Price Home a few years ago) two coats of Annie Sloan Graphite paint.

The two mini Eames inspired chairs & table from Esque fit right into the room & the triangular vinyl stickers completed the picture.

There are always some things left to do in a room. In this case, I would ideally like to move the curtain rail higher & add some black curtains with block out. Oliver is also likely to need a small desk in the next few years.

Are you planning any room makeovers soon? And how do you keep your kiddies’ rooms look neat & styled? Or is it an impossible task? I’d love to hear from you.

Thank you for visiting.

  1. Hi Yolandi, I just love what you’ve with Oliver’s room. Your Dulux Rollertester idea is super clever!

May I ask where you sourced the US Patent prints in the window?

    • Hi Nicole. Yay. So glad you like it. 🙂

I bought the downloadable prints on Esty.com in the shop called ‘Rare Vintage Posters’. I then had them printed & blocked at a local print shop. I love them, but I sadly got the size wrong, so they look a bit odd on the wall. That’s why they found their spot in the window.
